The Biden administration is taking applications for $285 million in federal funding, allotted from the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act, to establish a CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute focused on digital twins for the semiconductor industry. The institute aims to create a diverse network to share resources with companies developing and manufacturing both physical semiconductors and digital twins.

What to know:

  • Digital twins are virtual representations of physical chips that mimic the real version, making it easier to test new processors before production.

  • The funding will support operational activities, basic and applied research, shared facilities, demonstration projects, and workforce training related to digital twins.

  • Digital twin-based research can leverage AI to accelerate chip development and manufacturing in the US.

  • The government will brief interested parties on May 16th to discuss funding opportunities.

The CHIPS Act, passed in 2022 to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the US, has struggled to keep up with the capital demand. This new initiative aims to encourage the development of innovative processors, especially as demand for high-powered chips grows due to the AI boom.

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of launching its own search engine, codenamed "Sonic" and branded as "SearchGPT." Web developer Tibor Blaho has revealed unannounced features and details about the upcoming search product.

What to know:

  • SearchGPT will offer text-based search, image search, widgets, and follow-up questions, similar to the LLM search engine Perplexity.

  • Results will be displayed in a chat window similar to ChatGPT, with tabs for sources and images.

  • Web pages will be summarized in a maximum of 300 characters to address potential issues with unlicensed use of web content.

  • The language model powering SearchGPT could be GPT-4 Lite, GPT-4, or GPT-3.5.

  • OpenAI has reached agreements with several publishers, including the Financial Times, to display their news in full within ChatGPT.

As Google's AI developer conference I/O approaches on May 14th, OpenAI's launch of SearchGPT could give them a head start in the race to dominate the AI search market.
